Former WSU Residence Manager Accused Of Killing A Student Appears In Court Again

The man accused of killing a Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student and injuring another will return to the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

Manelisi Mampane is charged with the murder of student Sisonke Mbolekwa, who was shot on campus earlier this year. Another student, Sethu Ndamase, sustained critical injuries during the same incident.

According to authorities, the shooting occurred during a student protest at the Eastern Cape institution, where learners had gathered to demonstrate over poor living conditions.

Campus Protest Turns Deadly

Mampane, who previously worked as a residence manager at WSU, has pleaded not guilty to murder. However, he admitted to discharging a firearm during the protest — a gun that, he said, did not belong to him.

He reportedly claimed that students had set a car alight near his residence, prompting his reaction.

Mampane’s latest appearance comes after he withdrew his testimony from the Jafta Commission, which is investigating the unrest and the causes of violence at the institution.

The Commission continues to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatal protest and the broader tensions between students and university management.
