“I want to engage with people and help grow the film industry so upcoming performers don’t end up like us. I want their lives to be better, and I don’t want them to face the same struggles we do,” he said.
“Begging is very difficult for me. I just need help to live a decent life. I don’t need to be rich.”
Glen Gabela Points to Health Crisis Linked to Years of Unemployment
Speaking to Sunday World, Glen Gabela revealed that years without steady work have taken a devastating toll on his health. “I recently had a heart attack and was in hospital for three weeks.
“Doctors said it was because of stress and depression. I haven’t had any work since 2018 when I was let go from Uzalo, and I can’t even take care of myself,” he shared.
With a career spanning decades in television, theatre, and film, Gabela now spends his time writing scripts and developing production ideas.
“I have over 21 scripts ready for development, but I don’t have the resources. I haven’t formally applied for funding yet, but I’m in talks with business people. Still, what I need most is a job right now. I’m appealing to producers and directors to remember me.”
Surviving on the Kindness of Strangers
Currently living in Johannesburg, Gabela says he has been kept afloat by the generosity of strangers. “I am really grateful to those who brought me food, it means a lot to me,” he said.
Like Gabela, many veteran actors find themselves struggling once the spotlight fades.
