Former Mayor Of Oudtshoorn Sentenced To Five Years Imprisonment For Sexual Assault

The Oudtshoorn Magistrate’s Court has handed down a five-year prison sentence to the former mayor of the Klein Karoo town for sexually assaulting an employee in his office.

This is not the first time Mlandeli Abednico Nyuka has faced such charges, as he had previously been convicted and sentenced for sexual assault using the same modus operandi.

According to the prosecutor, Nyuka called the complainant into his office and locked the door, initially attempting to manipulate her by promising a job promotion.

However, he then proceeded to lift her dress and touch her private parts without her consent. Fortunately, the incident was interrupted when the telephone rang, giving the complainant the opportunity to escape the office and report the incident to the police.

During the trial, Nyuka denied the allegations, claiming that the complainant was part of a different faction within their political party and had offered him sexual favours.

However, he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation as to why this version was not presented earlier and was only brought up during the defence case.

Magistrate Sylvia Mandla found Nyuka’s evidence to be fabricated and determined that he had abused his position of seniority to obtain sexual favours.

In addition to the current conviction, the court also considered evidence from a previous case with the same modus operandi, further solidifying the argument that Nyuka is a sexual predator who exploited his position.

As a result, Nyuka has been sentenced to five years of direct imprisonment. The municipality has yet to provide a comment on the matter. This case serves as a reminder that sexual assault is a serious crime that will not be tolerated, regardless of one’s social or political standing.
