Former Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda Arrested Over Funeral Policy Scam

The recent arrest of Kabelo Gwamanda, the former mayor of Johannesburg, has reignited discussions surrounding allegations of fraud linked to his former role in a funeral policy company.
Once believed to be dead by those he deceived, Gwamanda’s life took an unexpected turn when he emerged as a mayor in one of Africa’s wealthiest cities. However, this week marks a significant shift as the allegations have finally caught up with him.

The Allegations Unfold
According to a report by the Sunday Times, Gwamanda voluntarily surrendered to police following the issuance of a warrant for his arrest in May. The investigation revealed that in 2011, Gwamanda, through his company Ithemba Lama Afrika, sold funeral policies to unsuspecting residents in Soweto.
While clients paid their monthly premiums faithfully, many found themselves unable to reach the company when complaints arose or when they sought refunds. An investigation by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) brought to light that the company had been operating unlawfully and had vanished with clients’ funds.
The Impact on the Community
The emotional and financial toll of Gwamanda’s alleged actions on the community cannot be overstated. Disturbing reports surfaced, including accounts from frustrated clients who believed both directors had committed suicide, only to see Gwamanda flaunting his new status on television as a public leader.

This shocking revelation prompted one client to take matters into her own hands, ultimately leading to an official case against him. Despite Gwamanda’s insistence that he had resolved the issues and was working transparently with clients, scepticism looms large in the community.
ANC regional secretary Sasabona Manganye previously stated that the party had conducted thorough vetting before Gwamanda took office, implying that he met the minimum basic requirements for his position. Yet, as these allegations continue to evolve, the integrity of that vetting process is now under scrutiny.
