Former Gang Leader’s Daughter Killed In Mitchells Plain Shooting

Three people were gunned down in a brazen shooting in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain, on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a teenage girl wounded. The shooting happened at a house on Viscount Street shortly before 5pm. A 15-year-old girl, believed to be Madatt’s daughter, survived the attack despite being shot and was rushed to a nearby hospital by residents for treatment.

Police say gunmen wearing balaclavas stormed the residence and opened fire on the occupants before fleeing the scene.

Gunmen in grey vehicle storm house and open fire

Western Cape police have launched a murder and attempted murder investigation following the deadly incident.

Andre Traut explained what officers found when they arrived at the scene.

“SAPS in the Western Cape has launched a murder and attempted murder investigation following a fatal shooting incident in Rocklands, Mitchells Plain, on Tuesday afternoon, March 10.

“At approximately 4.50 pm, police responded to a complaint at a residence in Viscount Street where three people were shot and fatally wounded. The deceased have been identified as a 39-year-old woman, a 29-year-old man, and a 36-year-old man. A 15-year-old girl who was also shot during the incident sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

“Preliminary reports indicate that an unknown grey vehicle stopped in front of the residence. Three unidentified males, whose faces were concealed with balaclavas, allegedly entered the house and opened fire on the occupants before fleeing the scene.

“Crime scene experts recovered several spent cartridges and other exhibits which will form part of the ongoing investigation. The motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related; however, this forms part of the investigation. Anti-Gang Unit detectives have taken over the investigation, and no arrests have been made at this stage.”

Traut added that anyone with information should contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit tips anonymously via the MySAPS mobile application.

Shooting follows earlier mass killing on the same street

The latest attack comes just months after another deadly shooting on the same road shocked the community.

In December 2025, nine-year-old Zechariah Matthee, his aunt Cleo Bailey and Mousheen Daniels were killed during a mass shooting on Viscount Street, close to where Tuesday’s murders occurred. Two other people were also wounded in that attack.

Zechariah, a learner at Caradale Primary School, was reportedly hiding in a cupboard when gunmen stormed the house and a nearby wendy house. Police have yet to make arrests in that case, with gang rivalry believed to be behind the violence.

Residents say tensions in the area have long been linked to gang turf battles and the drug trade.

Community condemns ongoing gang violence

Community leaders have strongly condemned the latest killings, saying gang warfare continues to terrorise residents.

Michael Jacobs of the Mitchells Plain United Residents Association (MURA) said the community had reached breaking point.

“As the Mitchells Plain United Residents Association, we condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the ongoing, senseless, and cowardly gang violence and killings that continue to plague the communities.

“These acts of targeted and indiscriminate killings, to settle territorial disputes over drug turf, are unacceptable. We call on the South African Police Service to hunt down these heartless killers and bring them to justice,” Jacobs said.

Police confirmed that suspects remain at large as Anti-Gang Unit detectives continue their investigation into the triple murder.
