Foreign Nationals Accused Faces Trial For East London Child Kidnapping

Foreign Nationals accused, face trial for kidnapping a nine-year-old girl in East London and have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance.

These trio, aged between 20 and 67, appeared before the East London Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing charges of kidnapping.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana confirmed that their case has been postponed to 4–5 March 2025 to allow for an interpreter.

“All three suspects remain in custody, and they will be applying for bail. However, the State will oppose their bail application,” said Mhlakuvana.

While the nationalities of the suspects have not been disclosed, the Hawks kidnapping task team, East London public order police, and hostage negotiators played a crucial role in rescuing the child and arresting the accused earlier this month.

The victim, Emaan Fatima, was kidnapped near her school, Dreamland Primary, in Buffalo Flats.

According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba, a silver-grey Toyota Corolla with no number plates approached the girl before she was forcibly taken away.

“Two unknown men allegedly grabbed her, abducting her in full view of other schoolchildren, while leaving her brother behind,” Fumba said at the time.

Following her safe rescue, there was jubilation outside the school, as learners and teachers celebrated her return.

Acting school principal Nobathandwa Dingaan described the emotional toll the kidnapping had taken on the school community.

“We are so happy. If you had been here the previous days, the energy would have been completely different. Learners were crying every day for Emaan, asking when she was coming back. We didn’t have answers for them.”

Dingaan confirmed that pupils have since received psychosocial counselling from the Eastern Cape Education Department and other support organisations.

Major General Obed Ngwenya, provincial head of the Hawks, praised the multi-disciplinary team for securing Emaan’s safe return and apprehending the suspects.

“This successful operation demonstrates the importance of intelligence-driven investigations in combating violent crimes such as kidnapping,” Ngwenya stated.

The case continues in March 2025, with authorities remaining firm in opposing bail for the accused.
