Foreign National Arrested After Truck With Explosives Stopped At Border Post

Police have arrested a 37-year-old foreign national at the Beitbridge border post after explosives were discovered in the truck he was driving. In a separate incident, Limpopo law enforcement engaged in a gun battle with armed suspects following the robbery of a bread delivery vehicle.

Explosives Bust at Beitbridge Border Post

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, two boxes of explosives were recovered during a routine inspection at the South Gate of Beitbridge on Thursday evening. The white truck, bearing Gauteng registration plates, was reportedly en route to that province.

“The suspect was immediately arrested and the vehicle was confiscated,” Mashaba confirmed.

The explosives are estimated to be worth R300,000. The driver is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on charges related to illegal possession of explosives. Investigations into the source and intended use of the explosives are ongoing.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe praised the swift action by law enforcement:

“The interception of these explosives is a significant achievement in our ongoing efforts to combat crime and protect our communities.”

Shootout After Bakery Truck Robbery in Ga-Sekgopo

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Limpopo on the same day, police exchanged fire with suspects involved in the armed robbery of a bread delivery truck in Ga-Sekgopo village.

Police identified and pursued a vehicle linked to the robbery. The suspects lost control of the car, leading to a shoot-out. Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng said the suspects opened fire and fled into nearby bushes.

“SAPS members returned fire, resulting in one of the suspects being injured in the leg,” said Thakeng.

A 30-year-old suspect was arrested and found in possession of unlicensed firearms, suspected stolen goods, cellphones, and tools likely used in the robbery, including a grinder and hammer.

A second suspect was arrested on Friday after a third firearm was found in Titibe village. Police confirmed that the suspects held the bakery truck crew hostage, stole cash and mobile phones, and tampered with a vehicle safe to steal an undisclosed sum of money.

The suspects will appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 7 April 2025, facing charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of stolen property.
