FlySafair Passengers Help Land Plane After Captain Falls Ill Mid-Air

A routine FlySafair flight from George to Johannesburg took an unexpected turn when passengers were asked if any qualified pilots were on board. The announcement came after the captain fell ill mid-flight, prompting the co-pilot to take full control of the aircraft.

Qualified Passenger Assists in Cockpit

While the first officer was fully trained and capable of landing the plane solo, the airline made a precautionary request for assistance to ensure maximum safety. A qualified pilot among the passengers stepped in to read the checklist aloud, ensuring all procedures were correctly followed. However, at no point did the passenger take control of the aircraft.

The co-pilot secured priority landing clearance and successfully landed the plane at O.R. Tambo International Airport without incident. Upon landing, the captain received immediate medical attention.
