FlySafair Passenger Dies After Mid-Air Medical Emergency

A domestic FlySafair flight from Durban to Johannesburg turned tragic on Sunday when a male passenger suffered a sudden medical emergency and died shortly before landing at OR Tambo International Airport.
Medical Crisis Mid-Flight
The incident occurred aboard Flight FA417, which had departed King Shaka International Airport on schedule. About halfway through the journey, the passenger—who had reportedly been medically cleared to travel—experienced a rapid health deterioration.
Cabin crew immediately began CPR and used a defibrillator while appealing for medical professionals on board. Several passengers with medical training stepped in to assist, but despite their combined efforts, the man was pronounced dead just minutes before the aircraft landed.

FlySafair Emergency Landing and Support Measures
Upon arrival in Johannesburg, emergency services were on standby and the aircraft was given priority to ensure immediate access to medical personnel. The passenger’s body was handed over to authorities for a post-mortem examination, with results pending notification of his family.
FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon expressed the airline’s condolences, confirming that the man had undergone medical checks before boarding.
“We recognise that this was distressing for our customers and crew. We are offering professional counselling services as part of our support,” Gordon said.
Passengers and crew have been offered trauma counselling, while the airline conducts an internal review of the incident to assess its emergency response protocols.
