Flavio Silva Scores On Debut As Kaizer Chiefs Beat Golden Arrows To Stay Top Of PSL

It took Flavio Silva less than 10 minutes to justify why Kaizer Chiefs signed him as a marquee player for the 2025/26 season.

The Portuguese striker made an instant impact after coming on in the second half, scoring with one of his first touches to hand Amakhosi a 1-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

This win marked Chiefs’ fourth victory of the season, keeping them level on 13 points with Sekhukhune United, who lead the Betway Premiership on goal difference after their 2-0 win over Durban City on Saturday night in Polokwane.

Chiefs Struggle Before Flavio Silva’s Breakthrough

Before Silva’s decisive strike, the match seemed destined for a goalless draw. Coach Nasreddine Nabi had turned to Silva, Gaston Sirino, and Mfundo Vilakazi just before the hour mark, replacing Mduduzi Shabalala, Ashley du Preez, and Pule Mmodi, who had failed to convert chances.

It was Sirino’s clever pass that allowed Silva to make the perfect introduction to the Amakhosi faithful, many of whom had questioned his signing after he scored nine goals in 33 games in the Indonesian league last season.

Despite Silva’s winner, Chiefs’ performance revealed lingering issues in the final third. “Their play was disjointed,” particularly in the first half where they wasted multiple scoring opportunities. Sirino nearly doubled the lead late on, but his effort went begging after being set up by Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

Golden Arrows, meanwhile, rarely threatened. Junior Dion hit the upright in the 55th minute, but Manqoba Mngqithi’s side only managed one shot on target all game.

While the Chiefs still lack a cutting edge in attack, Nabi will be pleased with the team’s defensive transformation. The Tunisian coach has overseen a dramatic turnaround—after conceding 32 goals in 28 league matches last season, Chiefs have now gone five games without conceding.

In other PSL action, history was made in Cape Town. Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile broke the long-standing PSL scoring record when he netted a penalty in his side’s 1-0 win over Stellenbosch FC.
