Five Suspects Killed In Shootout With Police In Ntuzuma

Five suspects are killed in a shootout with police in Ntuzuma, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday morning.

Speaking about the incident, Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said officers, acting on intelligence, tracked the suspects to Lindelani, where they found them sitting in two vehicles.

“Information indicated that the suspects were planning a business robbery in KwaMashu,” said Netshiunda.

The suspects’ vehicles were parked at the corner of Mdubu and Melusi streets, and police believe a dispute among the suspects led to them shooting at each other.

Police arrived at the scene and were met with gunfire from the suspects, prompting officers to retaliate. Four suspects were shot and killed on the spot and the fifth suspect, who tried to flee, was later found dead with gunshot wounds near a stream.

Netshiunda said, three firearms were recovered at the scene. Also police found a magazine near the river, but they are still searching for the missing firearm.

Two more suspects, who were injured when they shot at each other, were later found at a hospital. Police are now searching for other suspects who managed to escape.

Preliminary investigations revealed that two of the suspects, from Wentworth, had been previously arrested for business and house robberies.

Last week, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu reported a decline in murder cases nationwide in the latest crime statistics.

However, he highlighted that Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal remain the highest contributors to national murder figures, with KwaZulu-Natal accounting for 21.4% of cases, followed by the Eastern Cape (18.9%) and the Western Cape (17.4%).
