Five Suspected Rhino Poachers Killed In Shootout With Police In KZN

Five suspected rhino poachers were killed during a shootout with police in Hluhluwe in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

According to police, officers received intelligence that the suspects were travelling along the R618 towards a game reserve on Saturday evening.

Law enforcement officers then set up a stop-and-search operation along the route.

Shootout Erupts At Police Roadblock

Police said a shootout broke out when the suspects arrived at the roadblock.

“When the suspects arrived at the roadblock, a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. Five suspects were shot and fatally wounded,” police said.

No police officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

Authorities recovered a hunting rifle fitted with a silencer as well as two pistols from the suspects.

Rhino Poaching Declines But Remains A Major Threat

The incident comes as anti-poaching operations continue across Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and other conservation areas.

Officials said several interventions helped reduce rhino killings in the park over the past two years. The park recorded 63 rhino deaths in 2025, down from 198 in 2024.

Measures introduced included a strategic dehorning programme, advanced surveillance technology, stronger collaboration with private rhino owners and integrity testing of law enforcement personnel.

Nationally, South Africa recorded a 16% decline in poaching during 2025, with 352 rhinos killed compared to 420 in 2024.

Despite the decline, authorities remain concerned about poaching in Kruger National Park, where 175 rhinos were poached in 2025.

Investigations into corruption within anti-poaching structures at the park previously led to disciplinary action against several ranger services employees.

Additional field rangers, K9 units and new technology have since been introduced to strengthen anti-poaching efforts.
