Five Pupils And Parent Arrested For Disrupting Classes At Tsakane Secondary School

The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that five pupils and a parent were arrested at Tsakane Secondary School in Ekurhuleni on Thursday. The arrests followed a string of violent incidents that disrupted teaching and learning.

According to the department, the pupils had been involved in ongoing misconduct at the school, including throwing stones during Grade 12 camps, damaging school property, and setting fire to toilets.

Threats Against Teachers and Learners

On Wednesday, the group allegedly escalated their actions by threatening teachers and fellow pupils with knives, blocking school passages, and demanding money and mobile phones.

One of the pupils had previously been suspended for allegedly assaulting a female learner with a chair but reportedly continued returning to the school despite the suspension.

The disruption continued on Thursday when the group allegedly interrupted classes and even disrupted the Grade 12 preliminary examinations. Authorities say the parent who was arrested supported the disruptive behaviour instead of discouraging it.

Education MEC Warns Against Intimidation

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane condemned the incidents, stressing that violence and intimidation will not be tolerated in schools.

“We remain resolute in our commitment to protect the right to education and to ensure that teaching and learning continue without disruption in Gauteng schools. Every learner has a right to quality education, and every teacher has a right to a safe working environment,” Chiloane said.

“Threats or intimidation directed at the school or its employees will not be tolerated and will be dealt with through appropriate legal channels,” he added.
