Five Killed In Horror Crash Near Durban As Family Rushes Stab Victim To Clinic

A tragic early morning crash in Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal, has left five people dead and one critically injured.

Family’s Urgent Trip Turns to Tragedy

A desperate effort to save a critically injured family member ended in devastating loss when a vehicle crashed in Cato Ridge, north of Durban, early Sunday morning.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, a family of six was transporting a patient who had been assaulted and stabbed to a nearby clinic when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off Eddie Hagen Drive and collided with a concrete drain, splitting the vehicle in half.

“Reports are that a family of six were transporting a critically injured patient who had been assaulted and stabbed to the local clinic when they lost control and left the roadway before colliding with a concrete drain,” Jamieson said.

Crash Scene of “Total Carnage” as Emergency Teams Respond

Paramedics rushed to the scene just before 6am and were met with harrowing devastation.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find total carnage,” Jamieson said. “They found that the vehicle had basically split in half. Paramedics assessed the scene and found that all six male patients had sustained major injuries.”

Despite frantic efforts, one patient went into cardiac arrest and was declared dead at the scene. Five people were ultimately confirmed dead, while one critically injured survivor was transported to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

Jamieson confirmed that metro police search and rescue, the eThekwini Fire Department, and police units remain on scene to investigate the exact cause of the crash. “I would advise all motorists to avoid this area at all costs,” he warned.

Heavy Traffic Expected on KZN Roads This Weekend

Meanwhile, authorities are bracing for increased traffic volumes as holidaymakers make their way to KwaZulu-Natal during the long weekend.

N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) chief operating officer Thania Dhoogra said that while traffic was flowing smoothly on Sunday, conditions along the N3 route remain cloudy.

Dhoogra urged drivers to exercise patience and caution: “Road users are reminded to always be prepared for sudden changes in route and weather conditions which could impact the flow of traffic, and cause congestion and delays, especially during peak traffic periods,” she said.

She also encouraged passengers to assist drivers by staying alert to their surroundings to help anticipate any potential dangers on the road.
