KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested five suspects in connection with a jewellery store robbery at Gateway Shopping Mall in Umhlanga on Sunday.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 44, were apprehended in Umlazi following a coordinated police operation launched after the incident.

Police Act on Intelligence Leading to Umlazi Arrests

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said officers received crucial information while processing the crime scene, indicating that the suspects were attempting to find a buyer for the stolen goods in Umlazi.

Magwaza explained: “Whilst processing the scene at the mall, police received crucial information that the suspects in the robbery were seeking a buyer of the stolen items at Umlazi.

Police officers from the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, as well as the eThekwini District Task Team, swiftly acted on the intelligence and proceeded to Umlazi in search of the suspects.”

He added that the operation was carried out through swift coordination and determination, leading to the arrests in the early hours of Monday morning.

Stolen Jewellery Worth Millions Recovered

During the arrests, police recovered jewellery valued at approximately R3 million, along with clothing items, bank cards, and mobile routers believed to be linked to the robbery.

Magwaza said: “During the operation, jewellery estimated to be valued at R3 million was recovered, as well as clothing, bank cards, and mobile routers.”

The five suspects have been charged with business robbery and attempted murder. They are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
