Firefighters Remain On High Alert After Gansbaai Blaze Destroys 500 Hectares In Western Cape

Firefighters in the Western Cape remain on high alert after a wildfire ravaged approximately 500 hectares of land near Gansbaai. Crews are still keeping a close eye on smouldering hotspots as efforts continue to fully contain the blaze.

The fire ignited on Saturday and quickly spread through rugged mountainous terrain, which made it difficult for firefighters to access key areas and establish control lines.

Guests from the Grootbos Forest Lodge were evacuated as a safety measure on Saturday night, while nearby landowners were urged to remain vigilant in case of flare-ups.

Light Rain Offers Relief but Risks Remain

According to local authorities, light rainfall has helped slow the fire’s progress, easing some of the pressure on firefighting teams. Fortunately, no property damage has been reported so far.

However, officials have warned that the risk of flare-ups remains high. Relief crews continue to monitor the area closely to prevent the fire from reigniting under changing weather conditions.
