Fire Rips Through Mayfair Crèche, Claims Lives Of Four Young Children

A devastating house fire in Mayfair, Johannesburg, has claimed the lives of four toddlers, all under the age of two. Johannesburg emergency services were called to the scene around 11am on Monday, where they discovered the house engulfed in flames.

“On arrival firefighters found the house well alight. While conducting a search and rescue operation, four bodies of young children ranging from two years and below were recovered. Unfortunately, they were confirmed dead on the scene by Gauteng EMS paramedics,” said Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

A crèche and spaza shop operate from the house, with some neighbours alleging the creche owner was not compliant with safety regulations.

Residents claim the children may have been alone in the house when the fire started. They also claim the crèche was operating illegally. The creche owner is in police custody; however, SAPS is yet to confirm whether she has been criminally charged.

Heating Device Suspected as Cause of Deadly Fire

While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, authorities believe a heating device may have sparked the deadly blaze. Mulaudzi confirmed that the department’s fire investigation team is currently conducting preliminary assessments to determine the full circumstances.

The tragic incident comes as temperatures begin to drop across Gauteng, prompting concerns about safe heating practices in homes—especially in densely populated or informal housing areas.

City Urges Caution as Cold Front Approaches

With a cold front expected to hit the province this week, Mulaudzi issued a warning to residents to take extra care when using heating and cooking devices.

“We urge residents to be careful when using heating devices, including cooking devices and heaters, as colder winter weather approaches,” he said.

Gauteng Weather has forecasted a significant drop in temperatures, with lows expected to hit 2°C and highs around 13°C on Wednesday. Mulaudzi also reminded residents that in any life-threatening emergency, help is just a call away via the EMS emergency line at 011 375 5911.
