Finsch Diamond Mine Closure Leaves Northern Cape Businesses Facing Heavy Losses

The Finsch Diamond Mine closure has put local businesses under severe financial pressure, with suppliers claiming they are owed hundreds of thousands of rands and were given little warning before operations came to an end.
The Northern Cape mine is set to sell assets worth billions of rands following the approval of its business rescue plan. The closure comes as the operation faces mounting pressure in the natural diamond market, including growing competition from laboratory-grown diamonds.
For businesses that relied heavily on the mine, the shutdown has created an immediate cash-flow crisis. Some suppliers say they are still waiting for payments while also having to deal with employees who have not received money owed to them.
Finsch Diamond Mine Closure Leaves Suppliers With Unpaid Bills
The Finsch Diamond Mine closure has left some local contractors struggling to recover money they say they are owed by the operation. One business owner said more than half a million rand remains outstanding.
“The mine is owing me more than half a million. As yet, the mine did not give me any end of termination. I don’t know where I stand with them; my staff is still waiting for their money.”

The business owner said the lack of clarity has made it difficult to determine what happens next. The impact extends beyond the owners, with employees also waiting for money they are owed.
The mine's approved business rescue process will involve the disposal of assets worth billions of rands. The development follows mounting difficulties in the natural diamond market.
Finsch Mine Suppliers Left With Stock After Sudden Shutdown
For other Finsch mine suppliers, the closure has resulted in stock being purchased specifically to fulfil mine orders. One supplier said there was no warning that the business relationship was about to end.
“It has affected us badly, so even before the closure, there was no notification from the mine. We are their supplier. I have got a contract with them, so they buy food from us. In that week, we ordered food worth R50 to R60 000; now you can imagine I am sitting with that.”

The supplier said the financial impact was immediate because the food had been ordered in anticipation of supplying the mine. With the operation no longer purchasing from the business, the supplier has been left carrying the cost of the stock.
The closure has also raised concerns among businesses whose income was closely tied to the mine’s operations. For some, losing the mine as a major customer represents a substantial portion of their annual turnover.
Finsch Diamond Mine Shutdown Hits Local Business Turnover
The Finsch Diamond Mine shutdown has already affected turnover for businesses operating in the surrounding community. One business owner said the mine accounted for about half of the company's turnover before the closure.
“The mine is approximately fifty percent of our turnover and we have already seen a drop to thirty percent of our turnover,” the business owner said.
The closure therefore threatens not only the mine's direct workforce but also businesses that supplied goods and services to the operation. Local owners are now facing uncertainty over outstanding payments, existing contracts and the viability of their businesses.
As the business rescue process moves forward and the mine prepares for the sale of its assets, affected businesses are waiting for clarity on outstanding debts and the future of their relationships with the operation.
