Final Day For Non-Provisional Taxpayers To File SARS Returns And Avoid Penalties

It’s crunch time for South African non-provisional taxpayers — today is the last day to submit annual income-tax returns to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Last week, SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter reminded taxpayers that failing to submit returns on time is a serious offence. He warned that late filers could face administrative penalties and interest charges.
According to Kieswetter, around 80% of payers had already filed their returns before the 20 October deadline. This figure includes roughly six million taxpayers who were auto-assessed and received their refunds within 72 hours.
SARS Enhances Filing Support and Accessibility
The revenue service said it has taken major steps to make the tax filing process smoother and more accessible. Through improved digital platforms, Auto Assessment, and dedicated helplines, SARS aims to empower taxpayers to meet their obligations efficiently.

“These enhancements form part of our strategic focus to encourage voluntary compliance and enforce the law,” Kieswetter stated. “SARS will continue to identify and act against those who do not meet their tax obligations.”
Filing Early Prevents Stress and Penalties
Kieswetter cautioned that many people tend to wait until the last minute to file, which often results in errors, stress, and long queues at SARS branches. He advised taxpayers to file early in the future to avoid unnecessary pressure.
“Rushing invites errors, misjudgments, unnecessary stress, and long queues at SARS branches,” he said. “Filing early protects taxpayers from penalties and ensures a refund, if due, payable within a period of 72 hours.”
