Fifth Arrest Made in R7 Million Tshwane Transformer Theft Case

Police in Gauteng have confirmed the arrest of a fifth suspect linked to the high-profile theft of a transformer valued at R7 million from the City of Tshwane.

According to authorities, the suspect voluntarily handed himself over on Sunday and is expected to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said, “The investigation indicated the suspect as the potential buyer for the stolen transformer and a warrant of arrest was issued for him.”

Tshwane Municipal Officials Among Those Arrested

The case has already led to multiple arrests. Three Tshwane municipal officials were taken into custody in Laudium last week during an early morning police operation.

Their arrests are part of a broader investigation that began in November 2024, following the disappearance of the massive transformer from a Laudium substation.

Initially, 11 individuals were arrested, most of whom were subcontractors. However, ten of them were released after investigators could not link them directly to the crime.

Court Proceedings Continue for Remaining Accused

One suspect — a City of Tshwane employee — remains in custody and has appeared in court several times. This individual is set to return to court on August 8 as the legal proceedings move forward.

Authorities are urging anyone with further information to come forward.
