FF Plus Denies Shift Toward Cape Independence After Referendum Party Merger

The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) has dismissed suggestions that its recent merger with the Referendum Party signals a move towards advocating for Western Cape independence.

Party leader Corne Mulder said the decision to merge was aimed at simplifying South Africa’s crowded political landscape, which currently includes more than 500 registered parties, ahead of upcoming elections.

The Referendum Party, established in 2023, was a single-issue organisation focused solely on campaigning for a referendum on Cape independence — a proposal that Western Cape Premier Alan Winde declined to support.

FF Plus Clarifies Position On Western Cape Independence Debate

Mulder reiterated that while the FF Plus supports the broader principle of self-determination, the secession of the Western Cape is not part of the party’s core policy direction.

According to the party, the approach for the merger came from the Referendum Party itself. As part of the agreement, the Referendum Party will be formally deregistered and cease to exist as an independent political entity.

The FF Plus will assume control of the Referendum Party’s database, which includes around 8,000 supporters. These individuals will have the option to join the FF Plus if they choose.

What The Merger Means For Referendum Party Supporters And Leadership

Mulder clarified that the merger does not extend to the Cape Independence Advocacy Group, the civic organisation that originally led to the formation of the Referendum Party.

“People that are involved with the Cape Independence Advocacy Group will continue with the advocacy work as a civic group, but that stands outside and is not connected to the party, from our side,” said Mulder.

“We accommodate the ideals in terms of where we are, but as a national party operating throughout South Africa, we are committed to accommodate our constituents throughout,” Mulder said.

He also noted that former leaders of the Referendum Party will not automatically take up leadership roles within the FF Plus.

Instead, they would need to engage through party structures and compete at branch level should they wish to assume such positions.
