Father And Son Among Trio Arrested In R10.2 Million Gold, Platinum Bust

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has arrested three individuals, including a father and son, in connection with the illegal possession and suspected trafficking of gold, platinum, and large sums of cash totalling approximately R10.2 million.

The arrests were carried out at Crownwood Office Park, where Hawks officers intercepted two vehicles.

The operation revealed what authorities believe was an unauthorised gold dealership operating with expired permits.

Millions In Gold, Platinum, And Cash Seized

During the search, police found R100,000 in cash on one suspect and R70,000 on another.

Investigators suspect these funds are proceeds from the illegal trade of precious metals.

A deeper probe into the office premises uncovered gold and platinum ingots valued at R5 million, along with over R5 million in cash.

Additional equipment, including safes, digital scales, and calculators, was seized as evidence of the alleged illegal operations.

According to Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha, the site was “functioning as an unauthorised gold dealership with expired permits.”

Accused Appear In Court

The suspects, aged 22, 24, and 62, appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

They faced charges related to illegal possession and trafficking of gold, as well as dealing in second-hand jewellery without the necessary licences.

The case, registered at Booysens Police Station, has been postponed to Friday, April 11 for a formal bail application.
