Fatal Shootings In Kruger National Park, Poacher Dead In Shootout With Rangers

Police are investigating a fatal shooting after a suspected poacher was killed during a confrontation with field rangers inside the Kruger National Park (KNP).

The incident occurred when Section Rangers from SANPARKS’ Lower Sabie Section encountered two suspected poachers while on patrol at around 3:00 PM.

After tracking the suspects, the Rangers located them again at 6:15 PM.

The situation escalated when the suspects allegedly fired at the Rangers, prompting them to return fire.

One of the suspects was fatally wounded, and despite efforts to assist him, he succumbed to his injuries before accessing medical help.

Similar Incident In Malelane Area Just Days Earlier

The Skukuza shootout follows a similar event earlier in the week. On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, another suspected poacher was fatally shot by Rangers in the Malelane area of the park.

During that incident, two poaching suspects were confronted by Rangers.

A shootout ensued, with one suspect escaping and the other sustaining fatal injuries.

Authorities recovered a hunting rifle with ammunition from the deceased suspect, confirming the poaching activity.

Ongoing Investigations Into Poaching Activity

Both incidents are currently under investigation.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that authorities had found a hunting rifle, ammunition, and a knife on the deceased suspect in Skukuza, supporting the allegations of illegal hunting.

Both incidents remain under investigation as authorities work to identify the deceased suspects.
