A tragic accident in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, involving a Mercedes C-Class sedan and a truck has sparked intense debate over who was truly at fault. The incident occurred just after 4 am on Sunday morning, when CCTV footage, shared by SA Trucker, went viral across social media platforms.

The footage shows a truck turning across an intersection on the R40, while a black Mercedes speeds into the scene, colliding with the rear of the truck’s trailer despite trying to brake in time.

The Mercedes Deadly Collision

In the video, the truck is seen making a turn, while the Mercedes driver desperately tries to stop but is unable to avoid crashing into the rear section of the trailer.

Tragically, the female passenger in the car died on the scene, and the driver later succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Authorities suspect speeding was a key factor, as the footage appears to show the Mercedes travelling at an excessive speed.

While the footage suggests that the Mercedes driver had the right of way, questions have been raised about the speed at which the car was travelling.

Experts, like Blue Chevron Driving Academy, have pointed out that speeding reduces reaction time and stopping distance, which could have prevented the crash if the car had been driven more cautiously. “The Merc driver left no room for error,” said the academy, emphasising the importance of defensive driving.

While some argue the truck driver may not have seen the car due to a blind corner, many agree that the excessive speed of the Mercedes played a significant role in the accident. Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, urged South African motorists to remain vigilant, particularly as the festive season approaches. “Motorists should be wary of fatigue and how it affects their quality of driving,” Mmusi stated, reminding drivers not to speed but to prioritise safe driving practices.
