Fannie Masemola To Face Parliament Over Police Corruption And Political Interference Claims

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola is set to appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption. His testimony comes in response to submissions made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who concluded his appearance on Wednesday.

Mkhwanazi’s revelations included claims that Masemola nearly faced imprisonment due to political interference in the appointment process of senior officials within the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI), also known as the Hawks.

Political Interference And Disbandment Of Task Teams Under Scrutiny

Members of Parliament are expected to question Masemola about his alleged involvement in the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team and corruption within the Crime Intelligence division.

Masemola’s testimony will follow the same procedure as Mkhwanazi’s, beginning with an interview by evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse.

Committee members will then have the opportunity to question him on both his written statement and his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where he reportedly implicated Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Mkhwanazi: “Fannie Masemola Was On The Doorstep Of Prison”

During his appearance, Mkhwanazi told the committee that Masemola himself had been a target of manipulation within the police service.

“I can tell you that the national commissioner was on the doorstep of prison himself, not because he did anything wrong, but because it was part of a plan. The person who wanted to be the head of the DPCI because of his age, he could not be,” Mkhwanazi said.

Masemola’s hearing is scheduled to run over two days before Deputy Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya is called to testify next.
