Fannie Masemola Insists SAPS Is Not In Crisis Amid Corruption Probe

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has dismissed suggestions that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is in a state of crisis.

Addressing Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating corruption within the criminal justice system, Masemola said he believes the situation in the police force has improved significantly.

“I will not describe it as the police service is in a state of crisis,” Masemola told the committee on Wednesday.

His appearance followed KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive two-day testimony, in which he alleged widespread corruption and political interference within the SAPS.

Improvements Reported Since Mkhwanazi’s July Briefing

Masemola told MPs that policing performance and case enrolments have notably improved since Mkhwanazi’s July press conference. He credited these developments to renewed focus and coordination within the SAPS.

“[Regarding the] enrolment of cases, I would say it improved drastically. In the past, I know that it would take various members, even the PKTT [Political Killings Task Team], tremendous effort to get cases enrolled,” he explained.

The Commissioner said that issues previously raised by Mkhwanazi had been addressed or corrected, particularly those linked to the political killings task team, which had struggled to register cases in the past.

Committee to Probe Ministerial Influence and SAPS Vacancies

Masemola’s testimony formed part of the third day of parliamentary hearings into Mkhwanazi’s claims. Evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse questioned Masemola on whether corruption and governance failures had been tackled since the allegations came to light.

The hearings are expected to continue, with Masemola set to face further questions about suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s alleged influence and the reported moratorium on filling key SAPS vacancies.
