Family Of Slain E-Hailing Driver Demands CCTV Footage After Brutal Soweto Murder

The grieving family of e-hailing driver Siyanda Mthokozisi Mvelase, who was murdered and burned inside his car in Soweto, gathered in Ulundi on Saturday to bid him a final farewell.

Speaking at the funeral, his uncle Lucky Mvelase described the young man’s death as unbearable.

“We don’t even know what to compare what we’re experiencing to. But we hope that God will heal our wounds,” he said.

“I considered Mthokozisi as my own child… We never imagined that one day, we would gather like this at his funeral.”

Lucky described Siyanda as respectful, kind, and always smiling. Despite their anguish, he said the family had no choice but to accept the painful reality of his passing.

“Where Is the Footage?” Family Challenges Authorities

In an emotional address, Lucky questioned the authorities about the lack of progress in the investigation, pointing out that the crime scene had security cameras nearby.

“I went to where he died in Maponya Mall, across his car were a number of security cameras. We have not been told anything about that footage. We don’t know anything,” he said.

“We don’t even know who bought the petrol. I wish to tell the authorities that this not being revealed has deeply hurt us. We have no trust in you anymore.”

His words echoed the family’s growing frustration over the silence and delays in the investigation.

Other family members also spoke at the funeral. Thando Mvelase, Siyanda’s sister, remembered him as a caring man who embodied love and strength.

“In hard times we must remember Mthokozisi, the love and strength that he had for the family… We must always support and love each other as he did.”

His aunt, Ntombenhle Khuzwayo, tearfully recalled their close bond, describing their relationship as being more like friends.

No arrests have yet been made in connection with Siyanda’s murder. His death has intensified community anger in Soweto, where residents have demanded that minibus taxis stop intimidating e-hailing drivers at Maponya Mall.
