Family Of Slain UJ Student Were Pinning Their Hopes On His Future

The family of Nkosingiphile Nxumalo, an 18-year-old University of Johannesburg student, is devastated after he was tragically killed in a shooting incident in Braamfontein.

Nxumalo, a second-year accounting student, was commuting to his off-campus accommodation when he became an innocent victim of a stray bullet during a taxi violence-related attack.

The incident also resulted in two other students being shot when gunmen opened fire on a car parked on the side of the road, with a university bus being hit in the process.

The untimely death of Nxumalo has left his family and the university community in shock. Raised by a mother who works as a domestic worker, Nxumalo was the youngest among seven siblings.

His family had high hopes for his future, as he was a beneficiary of the NFSAS and was studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting. Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande, who visited the bereaved family, described Nxumalo as a promising student with a bright future.

Nzimande expressed his deep sadness and frustration, stating, “When we send our children to university, we want to fetch them in their gowns and celebrate them, not in coffins.”

The tragic incident has caused significant trauma among members of the university community. Nolitha Vukuza, the Director of Student Relations at UJ, spoke about the difficulty of collecting Nxumalo’s belongings from his residence, highlighting the emotional toll it has taken on everyone involved.

The family has identified Nxumalo’s body at the Johannesburg Mortuary, marking a heartbreaking end to a life full of potential and dreams. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the impact of violence on innocent individuals and the need for greater efforts to ensure the safety of students and communities.

As the family mourns the loss of their beloved son and brother, they hold onto the hope that Nxumalo’s memory will inspire positive change and a safer future for all students.
