Families Of Reiger Park Shooting Victims Live In Fear As Police Probe Intensifies

Families in Reiger Park remain gripped by fear after six people were gunned down in a deadly weekend shooting. The victims’ relatives say they are terrified of further victimisation following the brutal attack.

Acting Ekurhuleni Mayor Jongizizwe Dlabathi visited the grieving families on Monday, accompanied by senior city officials, to offer condolences and support.

According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded on Saturday when gunmen in two vehicles opened fire on a group of people, killing six and injuring three others. Among the wounded was a minor, whose mother declined to speak to the media.

Other mourning relatives also refused interviews, with residents suggesting that fear of retaliation was silencing them.

“Like today, I can say it’s Madu but I can’t say it’s Madu because I am scared that she will buy people to kill me,” said one resident, highlighting the community’s anxiety and mistrust.

Acting Mayor Urges Residents to Speak Out Against Crime

During his visit, Acting Mayor Dlabathi reassured the affected families that while the city could not undo their pain, it remained committed to fighting crime in Reiger Park. He urged residents to take a stand and report criminal activity despite the risks.

“Some of these criminals, we live with them in our communities, we know exactly what it is that they are doing, but probably we don’t have the audacity or the zeal to stand up against them,” he said.

Dlabathi confirmed that the police had made the case a top priority, with investigators working to track down the perpetrators.
