Fake Arrest Warrant Scam In Ethekwini: R7,500 Stolen From Victim

An Ethekwini man fell victim to an elaborate scam, losing R7,500 to an individual pretending to be a police officer. The incident was reported to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) earlier today (Tuesday).

According to the 29-year-old victim, he received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer who knew his full name.

The caller alleged that a case of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse had been opened against him and insisted that a warrant for his immediate arrest had been issued by the Johannesburg Central Regional Court.

Fraudster Demands Payment to Avoid Arrest

During the call, the scammer instructed the victim to pay a R7,500 “deposit” into a First National Bank account. He told the man that this payment would serve as a guarantee while he negotiated with the court to revoke the warrant.

Fearing arrest at his workplace in KwaZulu-Natal, the victim transferred the funds. Shortly afterward, he received a falsified document claiming the arrest warrant had been revoked.

Despite knowing he had no criminal charges, the victim acted out of fear. After making the payment, he went to the nearest Community Service Centre (CSC) and local police station.

Investigators discovered that the two case numbers provided by the impersonator were linked to unrelated matters. It was then that the victim realized he had been scammed.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, as scams of this nature continue to rise across the country.
