Factory Blast Horror: One Dead, Three Injured In Johannesburg Explosion

One person has been killed and three others injured following a powerful explosion at a paint manufacturing facility in Johannesburg South. The blast occurred on Meson Road in Electron on Wednesday afternoon, prompting an urgent emergency response.

Firefighters and hazardous materials teams were rushed to the scene as smoke billowed from the industrial site.

Emergency Crews Rush to Smouldering Factory Scene

Johannesburg Emergency Services said teams were alerted to the incident shortly after 2:30pm and immediately deployed to the factory.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said EMS firefighters and hazmat units arrived to find the building still smouldering. The explosion is believed to have involved chemicals used at the plant, although details remain unclear.

“Preliminary reports indicate three casualties, including one fatality declared on scene. EMS Inspectors remain on site conducting investigations,” Khumalo said.

Unknown Chemicals at Centre of Investigation

Authorities have not yet disclosed which substances may have triggered the explosion. Investigators are now working to determine how the blast occurred and whether safety protocols were followed at the facility.

The area was secured as emergency personnel continued assessments to ensure no further danger to workers or nearby properties.

In an unrelated incident, no injuries were reported after a fire broke out at a bank south of Johannesburg earlier this week.

Johannesburg Emergency Services were called to Standard Bank at the corner of Ellis and Carnation streets in Constantia Kloof on Tuesday just after 9am.

“Upon arrival, EMS firefighters conducted evacuation and firefighting operations, ensuring all staff were safely evacuated and accounted for,” Khumalo said.

“The fire has been contained, with firefighters remaining on site to carry out damping-down operations.”

Khumalo added that smoke lingered in the area and that the cause of the fire is also under investigation. “At this time, no staff injuries have been reported.”
