Explosives Expert Arrested At Nasrec For Trespassing Ahead Of G20 Summit In Johannesburg

As South Africa gears up to welcome global leaders to the upcoming G20 Summit, an explosives expert has been arrested for alleged trespassing at the National Exhibition Centre (Nasrec) in Johannesburg.

The arrest took place on Monday, 3 November 2025, just weeks before the G20 Social Summit, scheduled for 18–20 November 2025. Authorities said the man’s actions were intended to challenge South Africa’s readiness to secure the high-profile event.

“[An explosives expert] got more than he bargained for when he was arrested on Monday, 3 November 2025, at Nasrec for [alleged] trespassing.

“His stunt at Nasrec was an attempt to prove his falsehood that South Africa’s security apparatus was not ready to secure the forthcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit,” said Baloyi, speaking on behalf of government officials.

Authorities Reaffirm G20 Summit Security Readiness

According to Baloyi, the arrest demonstrates that law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to protect delegates during the global gathering.

“His arrest is a clear demonstration that the law enforcement agencies are more than ready to ensure the security of all delegates to the G20 Leaders’ Summit,” he added.

The explosives expert had previously claimed that major airports — OR Tambo International, Cape Town International, and King Shaka International — were not compliant with bomb-safety standards.

Authorities have dismissed those claims, insisting that preparations are robust and comprehensive.

Baloyi confirmed that since taking over the G20 Presidency, South Africa has successfully hosted over 130 preparatory meetings, including sessions at the ministerial and central bank governor levels, without incident.

Government Calls for National Support

Baloyi urged South Africans to unite behind the nation as it hosts the G20 for the first time, warning against actions that could tarnish the country’s image.

“We want to appeal… to make sure that people welcome the leaders. The G20 Summit that we are hosting is quite a big event, and they must all rally behind the country to welcome these people and not try to make a mockery of this important thing, as it will affect the image of the country, and that won’t be tolerated from our side as the government,” he said.

South Africa assumed the G20 Presidency on 1 December 2024, succeeding Brazil, under the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.”
