Ex-Hawks Head Godfrey Lebeya Linked To Katiso Molefe At Madlanga Commission

A senior Hawks officer has directly connected former Hawks head Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya to alleged criminal underworld figure Katiso “KT” Molefe, during testimony before the Madlanga Commission.

Divisional Commander of the Hawks’ national priority offences operations, Major-General Dumisani Mbotho, told the inquiry that it was Lebeya who personally gave him Molefe’s Sandton home address on 6 December last year.

Molefe was later arrested for allegedly masterminding the murder of Vaal engineer Armand Swart. Monday’s hearings at the commission centred on alleged Hawks interference in the arrest, which had been carried out by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Officer Testifies on Godfrey Lebeya’s Phone Call

Mbotho revealed that on the day of Molefe’s arrest, he received a call from Lebeya questioning him about operations in Sandton.

“He continued to say the reason he is asking me is because he has received a call and the call stated there are members of the DPCI who are alleged to have been sent by him who are at an address – he didn’t mention the address at the time but it would have been at Sandton,” Mbotho testified.

Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga then asked, “Did General Lebeya say who he received a call from?”

Mbotho replied, “No, he didn’t.”

Madlanga continued, “Did you ask him?”

Mbotho answered, “No, I didn’t ask him.”

The officer added that he only discovered months later that the house in question belonged to Katiso Molefe.
