Evidence Linking Police Minister Mchunu To Criminal Syndicates Will Be Presented, Says Mkhwanazi

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has revealed that investigators have collected evidence suggesting a link between Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and criminal syndicates.

Speaking under oath at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on its opening day at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria, Mkhwanazi said investigators will formally present the material to the commission. Some of the evidence may only be disclosed during closed sessions.

“The evidence is there that will support my conclusion. Men and women who are part of the investigation in Gauteng will come before this commission and confirm that evidence under oath,” Mkhwanazi stated.

Gauteng Investigations Allegedly Point to Minister’s Links

Mkhwanazi explained that the evidence originates from investigations into organised crime in Gauteng, where teams under his command gathered testimony and documentation implicating Mchunu.

He stressed that the findings tie the minister “to some degree” to criminal activity.

“We have no reason not to believe that it is the real evidence that proves the linkages between the syndicates and the Minister himself,” Mkhwanazi told the inquiry.

Commissioner Details Attempts to Engage Mchunu

The police commissioner also testified that he made repeated attempts to raise concerns directly with Mchunu, but his efforts were unsuccessful.

He first approached the national commissioner, the chief of staff, and later even external intermediaries to seek dialogue with the minister. Finally, he sent a WhatsApp message, which Mchunu acknowledged, but no meeting followed.

“I continuously tried different individuals outside the structure of government, people that I thought the minister might listen to. I tried to engage them, to try and reach out to the minister so that we can talk about this. But that did not give me any success,” Mkhwanazi said.

He confirmed that the evidence — which includes communications and documents — will be formally presented before the commission. Investigators from Gauteng are also expected to corroborate his claims under oath.

“The individuals… have gathered evidence to support the allegations that we ended up making. They are going to come before this Commission and they’re going to present that evidence,” he added.
