eThekwini Municipal Official Shot Dead In Durban Ambush; Two Others Injured

A senior eThekwini municipal employee was gunned down in a hail of bullets while on his way home in Redcliffe, north of Durban, on Thursday night. The 51-year-old victim, who served as a deputy superintendent in the city’s Roads and Storm Water Department, was fatally shot while driving along Hazelmere Drive near the corner of Quarry Road.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the man was travelling with his 32-year-old girlfriend and a colleague when three gunmen opened fire on their Hyundai i10 shortly before 7pm.

“Rusa officers and paramedics were dispatched and found the driver of the vehicle slumped in his seat. He was shot many times and died before the arrival of first responders,” said RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram.

Passengers Flee as Gunmen Fire at Close Range

The ambush unfolded rapidly, with the shooters positioned at the roadside before launching their attack.

“The passengers fled. The gunmen continued shooting at the driver while they walked towards the car. They fled on foot,” Balram added.

The woman sustained a gunshot wound to her buttocks, while the other male passenger was grazed by a bullet on his back. Both were treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.

At least 13 spent 9mm cartridges were recovered from the scene, pointing to the sheer intensity of the shooting.

eThekwini Community Reeling as Police Investigate Motive

The motive behind the brazen killing remains unclear, but the execution-style attack has raised concerns about targeted violence in the area.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been made public, but he is believed to be from Mhlasini, not far from where the attack occurred.

Law enforcement authorities have launched a manhunt for the three suspects and are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
