Eskom Secures 20-Year Licences To Keep Koeberg Units Running As SA Expands Nuclear Plans

Eskom has officially secured two new operating licences for Koeberg Unit 1 and Unit 2, ensuring the Western Cape nuclear plant will continue generating electricity for another 20 years.

The announcement marks a significant milestone for South Africa’s energy sector as the government pushes ahead with broader nuclear expansion plans.

Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, confirmed the development during a media briefing in Pretoria, emphasising the long-term importance of nuclear power in stabilising the country’s electricity supply.

“Nuclear energy will continue to play a critical role in electricity generation in the country,” he said.

South Africa’s Nuclear Expansion Gains Momentum

Eskom is moving ahead with plans to introduce an additional 5.2 gigawatts of nuclear power through new-build projects. According to Ramokgopa, a fully approved site for the next nuclear generation plant has already been identified, clearing the way for rollout.

“The IRP says you can proceed with a newly built programme. We are also permitted to demonstrate, now that there is a site that is fully permitted for us to be able to roll out the programme,” he explained.

Exploration of Additional Nuclear Sites

The minister also revealed that further locations are under consideration as part of the expanded nuclear strategy.

“Of course we are exploring other sites in Eastern Cape in relation to a new Nuclear Build Programme,” he added.
