Nelson Simiao Massango, one of over 1500 prisoners who escaped the Maputo Maximum Prison during violent unrest in December 2024, was arrested by South African police in Sandton, Gauteng.

Massango, who was convicted of murder in 2015 and sentenced to 20 years, was tracked and apprehended by the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Border Policing High-Density Team.

The arrest took place at a car hire dealership in the affluent Sandton area, where Massango was reportedly involved in illegal activities.

Link To Vehicle Theft Scheme

Following Massango’s arrest, further investigations have revealed his possible involvement in a vehicle theft operation across Gauteng.

According to authorities, Massango was allegedly renting 4×4 bakkies, smuggling them into Mozambique, and subsequently selling them.

The SAPS Border Policing team has been working tirelessly to locate and apprehend individuals who escaped the Maputo prison, with a focus on tracking fugitives who may have crossed into South Africa.

Interpol Collaboration In Fugitive Hunt

In light of Massango’s arrest, INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB) Pretoria has collaborated with its Maputo counterpart to investigate the fugitive’s movements and connections.

General Fannie Masemola, the National Commissioner of SAPS, has commended the Border Policing High-Density Team for their dedication to capturing dangerous criminals attempting to evade justice.
