In a recent turn of events, Wendy Mbatha, a well-known influencer and sister of actress Nomzamo Mbatha, along with her boyfriend Senzo Cele, made a brief appearance in the Pinetown magistrate’s court.

The couple was arrested in KwaMashu on Sunday for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman at the Pavilion mall on Thursday.

The arrest came after a video of the alleged assault went viral on social media, sparking outrage from the public. In the video, several men can be seen trying to restrain a man who is punching a woman, believed to be three months pregnant.

The couple is charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Snothile Gumede, the victim, and it is also alleged that they spat on her.

During the court proceedings, the defence advocate expressed concern over the couple’s arrest, as the investigation is still ongoing. He highlighted that both Mbatha and Cele are self-employed, with Cele being a money lender and selling skin products, while Mbatha holds the position of COO in a company.

Magistrate Nompumelelo Ndlovu set bail at R1,500 each and adjourned the case to April 29 for further investigation.

The swift action taken by the police in arresting the alleged attackers was praised by KwaZulu-Natal social development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza. She emphasized that such acts of violence have no place in society, and those responsible must face the full consequences of the law.
