Chidimma Adetshina, a former Miss South Africa contestant, is at the centre of a citizenship probe. The Department of Home Affairs disclosed in Parliament that the Hawks are investigating Adetshina and her father.
The investigation stems from suspicions that Adetshina’s mother committed identity theft in 2001 during Chidimma’s birth registration. The department has found prima facie evidence to support these claims.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Adetshina has been allowed to travel outside the country as she pursues the Miss Universe Nigeria crown, which will be held on August 31. This decision has raised concerns about whether Adetshina is breaking the law by travelling internationally.
Immigration lawyer Ashraf Essop clarified to SurgeZirc SA that she has the right to travel freely unless the authorities decide otherwise. He emphasized that no official restrictions have been placed on her, and her passport remains valid.
Activist Mayibuye Mandela expressed concerns about Adetshina’s travel plans amid the criminal investigation. Mandela called for clarity on any potential travel restrictions and legal issues that might impact her ability to participate in international events. He stressed that his concerns are not personal but are aimed at ensuring the law is upheld.
According to the Home Affairs department, if the investigation concludes that Adetshina’s mother committed fraud, Chidimma’s identity documentation could be jeopardized. This would affect her South African ID and passport.
However, if Adetshina was born in South Africa, she would still have the option to reapply for a new ID. Meanwhile, she remains a leading contender in the Miss Universe Nigeria contest, having landed in Nigeria recently to compete.
