Enhle Mbali Spills The Tea On How Her Love With Black Coffee Began—And Crumbled In Spotlight

Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa has lifted the lid on the rise and fall of her love story with international DJ Nkosinathi “Black Coffee” Maphumulo—revealing intimate details that sound straight out of a drama series.
Testifying before the Johannesburg High Court, the Isibaya actress recounted how her romance with the global superstar began on set and unravelled under the weight of fame, family disapproval, and fading trust.
According to a judgment by Judge Mongezi Ntanga, the actress said she first met Black Coffee while filming the SABC1 drama Tshisa, where he made a guest appearance. Their connection deepened when their paths crossed again on another production, Young, Gifted and Black.
A Facebook DM That Sparked a Love Story
In court, Enhle revealed that it was Facebook messages that ignited their relationship. Black Coffee was reportedly persistent in asking her out—until she finally said yes.
“Due to the defendant’s persistence over time, she finally gave in and agreed to go out on a date with the defendant for coffee or dinner,” court papers read.

Their first night out was hardly glamorous. After attending two of his gigs—one in Wattville and another in Rosebank—they grabbed food from a convenience store since restaurants were already closed.
Back at his place, the two spent hours in deep conversation. “They decided to get something to eat from a convenience store and went to the defendant’s house, where they had a great conversation, and they might have spoken until the early hours of the morning,” the judgment stated.
“When she wanted to leave that evening and go home, the defendant talked her out of it. They spent the night together and had a conversation until the sun rose; from that day on, they became inseparable.”
Enhle Mbali and Black Coffee Went From Fairytale to Fracture
Their bond grew quickly, and soon Enhle was pregnant. She confessed she was anxious about having a baby out of wedlock, but Black Coffee reassured her that he had a plan for their future.
“She started crying, and the defendant comforted and assured her that she had nothing to worry about, as there was a plan for their future,” noted Judge Ntanga.
Although her uncles initially disapproved, Enhle convinced them that Black Coffee was a successful man who could provide for her. The superstar DJ later paid lobola amounting to R70,000.

But what began as a picture-perfect love story slowly began to unravel. Enhle testified that her acting career took a hit when her husband grew uncomfortable with her performing romantic scenes.

“The defendant was no longer comfortable with her taking kissing scenes,” the judgment quoted.
“She testified that the majority of the time, she was not working. In order to keep peace in the household, she looked after the house, packed the defendant’s clothes, fed him, and massaged the defendant’s injured hand.”
Courtroom Drama Over Millions
The revelations emerged as the couple faced off in court over the division of their estate. Enhle—who shares two children with the Grammy-winning DJ—requested R500,000 in monthly maintenance, claiming they were married in community of property since lobola had been paid.
Black Coffee, however, disputed this, insisting their union was not in community of property and opposing the equal split of assets.
Their once-golden love story now lies in legal limbo, marked by emotional testimony, lost dreams, and a public that can’t stop watching the drama unfold.
