EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi Placed On Special Leave Amid Links To ‘Cat’ Matlala

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been placed on special leave following allegations connecting him to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The city confirmed that Mkhwanazi applied for the leave himself, and it was approved this week.
Suspension Decision Looms for Julius Mkhwanazi
The Ekurhuleni city council is expected to decide on Thursday whether Mkhwanazi should be suspended.
This follows recent claims made at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused the deputy chief of granting undue favours to Matlala.

Last year, reports emerged alleging that Mkhwanazi handed over police blue lights to Matlala, who faces attempted murder charges. Despite the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) recommending disciplinary action, he was later promoted to acting head of EMPD.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe confirmed the development, stating:
“He made the application on Tuesday and that special leave was approved.
“As to how long, I don’t have that information. The process of applying for leave is a matter between an employee and their employer.”
The council’s final decision on whether to suspend Mkhwanazi is expected soon.
