Emmarentia Road Rage Suspect Walks Free As NPA Declines To Prosecute

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided not to move forward with prosecution — for now — against a 58-year-old man arrested in connection with a fatal road rage shooting in Emmarentia, Johannesburg.

NPA Decision Pending Further Investigation

The suspect had been expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of murder and attempted murder following the death of 48-year-old Faisal ul Rehman.

However, NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole confirmed the decision to hold off on prosecution.

“After careful consideration of the evidence of the alleged road rage incident which occurred in Emmarentia, the NPA has decided not to prosecute the matter pending further investigation,” Mohlatlole said.

Self Defence Claim at Centre of Case

The man’s legal representatives submitted arguments to prosecutors claiming he acted in self-defence.

In a warning statement, the suspect alleged that Rehman and his wife, Tehseen, verbally and physically attacked him after a collision.

He further claimed that Tehseen retrieved a firearm and discharged it before handing it to her husband, who also allegedly fired in his direction.

According to his statement, he then used his own firearm in what he described as private defence, fatally wounding Rehman and injuring Tehseen.

Police Version of Events

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi previously said the shooting followed a minor collision on Barry Hertzog Avenue.

“It is alleged that a female passenger, suspected to be the wife of one of the drivers, went to get a firearm from the car, and the second driver also pulled out his firearm, resulting in a shooting which claimed the life of the husband, leaving the other driver and the female passenger injured,” Nevhuhulwi said.

“The police will be investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

“The public, especially drivers, is urged to always abide by traffic rules and exercise patience while using public roads to avoid road rage situations.”

The decision has dealt a blow to the Rehman family, who have indicated they will continue to pursue justice.

A relative, Muhammad Wasi Haider, ранее told media he intends to take the matter further.

Meanwhile, a video of the incident circulating on social media has intensified public reaction. The footage shows the victim’s children at the scene, with bystanders attempting to assist following the shooting.
