Elukwatini Teacher, 56, Arrested After Shooting Girlfriend And Her Daughter On Valentine’s Day

A 56-year-old teacher is in police custody after a fatal shooting claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman in Elukwatini, Mpumalanga, during the early hours of Saturday morning.

The incident has left one woman dead and her daughter injured.

Fatal Shooting in Elukwatini Leaves Mother Dead, Daughter Injured

According to Mpumalanga police, officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 02:10.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a 22-year-old woman in the street suffering from a gunshot wound to her foot. She informed officers that her mother’s male friend had shot her and that her mother had also been wounded inside the house.

Police entered the residence and discovered a 45-year-old woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Emergency Medical Services declared her dead at the scene. Her daughter was transported to hospital for treatment.

Suspect Arrested at Scene, Firearm Seized

The suspect was located inside the home and arrested immediately.

Police confiscated a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. The 56-year-old man is expected to appear in the Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.

Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, condemned the killing and extended condolences to the victim’s family.

He expressed concern about ongoing incidents of gender-based violence and femicide, stating that such acts must come to an end. He urged members of the public to seek assistance when dealing with personal challenges rather than turning to violence.

Police are continuing their investigation.
