Elsies River Residents ‘Held Hostage’ As Gang Violence Spirals Out Of Control

Residents of Elsies River say they are living in fear as relentless gang violence grips their community. The local Community Policing Forum (CPF) has described the situation as residents being “held hostage” by gangsters, with shootings erupting in the area this week alone.

On Tuesday, a 14-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet, and just a day later, a 20-year-old man was shot in another incident that drew CPF intervention. The violence has left the community traumatised and struggling to cope.

In September, another 14-year-old boy who was caught in the crossfire tragically lost his life. The recurring shootings have left residents desperate for peace and fearful for their children’s safety.

Ongoing Shootings Leave Families in Fear

With end-of-year exams underway, parents and learners alike are facing mounting anxiety. Many say they feel helpless as they try to keep their children safe while gang warfare unfolds in the streets around them.

CPF chairperson Marius Fourie expressed deep concern over the situation, particularly the abundance of firearms circulating in the community.

“It’s gangsters; gangsters are holding the community hostage, and it is wrong – it’s just wrong,” Fourie said. “I don’t know where these firearms are coming from. There have been so many firearms that have been taken from the street, but it just doesn’t stop.”

Fourie added that the continuous flow of illegal guns has made the problem nearly impossible to contain.

“It is very, very sad how these firearms get on the road. I don’t know where they come from, they’re just too much. And the pools don’t seem to dry up; it just keeps on coming and coming and coming,” he said.

As the community pleads for intervention, residents say they can only hope that authorities act swiftly to restore safety and bring an end to the bloodshed terrorising their neighbourhood.
