Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo Fundraiser Surpasses R84,000 Target After Her Death

A fundraising campaign established in memory of Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo has raised more than R84,000 within days of being launched, exceeding its original target by more than R34,000.

The authorised BackaBuddy campaign was launched on Monday to support Moselakgomo’s family following her death. By Wednesday morning, donations had reached R84,533.

The funds will be directed towards supporting the 38-year-old runner’s eight-year-old daughter and other members of her family during the difficult period ahead.

Elizabeth Moselakgomo Fundraiser Raises More Than R84,000

The Elizabeth Moselakgomo fundraiser initially set out to raise R50,000, but donations quickly pushed the campaign beyond that figure. Organisers said the response reflected the desire of people who did not personally know Moselakgomo to assist her family.

“We may not have known Elizabeth personally, but sometimes a story touches you and you simply want to help,” the fundraising organisers said in a statement.

The organisers said they would communicate directly with Moselakgomo’s family to determine how the money could best assist them. Particular attention will be given to the needs of her young daughter.

“We will be making contact with Elizabeth’s family directly, and funds raised will be used to support them through the difficult weeks and months ahead, particularly the needs of her young daughter.”

They acknowledged that the donations could not change what had happened to Moselakgomo. “No donation can undo what has happened, but together we can help carry a small part of the burden this family now faces.”

Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo Identified After Going Missing

The Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo case began after the 38-year-old went missing last week following a run. Her family later travelled to the Germiston mortuary, where they positively identified her body on Monday.

Moselakgomo's death is among eight cases currently being investigated by police in Ekurhuleni. The bodies of eight women have been discovered at different locations in the area over the past two months, prompting police to bring in experienced investigators to examine the cases.

Police are investigating the deaths as part of a broader inquiry while working to establish whether the individual cases are connected. A R400,000 reward has also been announced for information that could assist police in their investigation into those responsible.

Moselakgomo's death has prompted an outpouring of support from members of the public, as well as from people connected to her running community.

Vitality Running Club To Support Moselakgomo Family

Moselakgomo's Vitality running club has also expressed its condolences following her death and confirmed that it will contribute towards supporting her family.

In a post on X, Discovery Vitality South Africa CEO Dinesh Govender said he was “saddened and horrified” by the news.

“Our thoughts are with her daughter, and the rest of her family and community, including her Team Vitality running friends,” Govender said.

“Discovery Vitality will be making a contribution to support.”

The fundraising campaign remains focused on assisting Moselakgomo’s daughter and family as they deal with the aftermath of her death. The campaign's organisers have thanked those who have contributed towards the appeal.
