Missing Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu’s Body Found In Mozambique

The body of missing Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, has been recovered in Mozambique, bringing a heartbreaking end to an intense search that lasted more than a week.
The devastating news was confirmed by Mngwevu’s family in a statement released on Tuesday night, sending shockwaves through political circles and communities across Gauteng.
Flood Tragedy Claims Life of Ekurhuleni MMC
Mngwevu, who was 40 years old, disappeared after the vehicle he was travelling in with friends was swept away by severe flooding in the Chokwé region of Mozambique.
The incident triggered an urgent cross-border search and rescue operation, as authorities and volunteers worked tirelessly to locate those involved.
In their statement, the family said they were shattered by the discovery of his body, describing the moment as deeply painful after days of hope and uncertainty.

Since confirmation of his death, messages of sympathy and condolences have poured in from colleagues, political leaders and members of the public.
Gauteng Government Pledges Support to Andile Mngwevu’s Family
The Gauteng provincial government said it was deeply saddened by Mngwevu’s passing and committed itself to supporting his family during this difficult time.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, conveyed the government’s message of condolence.
“We will be supporting the families during this difficult time and once again we convey our deepest condolences to the families of the MMC together with the persons he was with in the vehicle, whose identities are yet to be confirmed.”
Officials previously confirmed that one person survived the incident and has been assisting authorities with search and rescue operations.
Family to Announce Repatriation and Funeral Plans
Mngwevu’s family said discussions around the repatriation of his body to South Africa and funeral arrangements would be shared at a later stage.
They noted that they are still coming to terms with the loss of a loved one taken too soon under tragic circumstances.
The recovery of his body has brought closure to the search, but marks the beginning of a period of mourning for his family, colleagues and the wider Ekurhuleni community.
