Flood Horror: Ekurhuleni MMC Andile Mngwevu Missing After Mozambique Wash-Away

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has confirmed that its MMC for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, is missing after floods in Mozambique reportedly swept away the vehicle he was travelling in.

According to the city, Mngwevu had travelled to the Chokwè area, which has been badly affected by intense rainfall. Authorities are yet to determine the exact point where he went missing, but emergency teams are actively searching for him.

Mozambique has been battling severe downpours in recent days, with the heavy rain triggering widespread flooding across several regions.

Andile Mngwevu’s Vehicle Swept Away as Search Efforts Intensify

The Office of the Mayor in Ekurhuleni said Mngwevu was travelling in a vehicle that was overtaken by floodwaters. At this stage, officials have not confirmed the precise location where the incident occurred.

South African rescue teams have since been dispatched to Mozambique to assist in the operation. They are reportedly in contact with one of the five occupants who were travelling in the same vehicle as the MMC at the time of the incident.

Family and National Government Join Rescue Operation

Mngwevu’s wife travelled to Mozambique on Tuesday evening as efforts to locate him continue.

The national government has also been brought in to support the unfolding rescue mission. Confirming the developments, the Office of the Mayor said: “The national government has been roped in to assist with the search efforts.”
