Ekurhuleni Responds To Claims Of EMPD Horses Starving, Looking Thin And Weak

In recent days, allegations concerning the welfare of horses under the care of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) have emerged. Reports claim that these animals are starving and emaciated, raising concerns within the local community.

The alarm was first raised by a concerned resident, triggered by a WhatsApp message from a station commander soliciting food donations for the horses in Zesfontein Agricultural Holdings.

City of Ekurhuleni’s Response

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has responded to these allegations, emphasizing their commitment to animal welfare. While the CoE did not confirm or deny the claims, spokesperson Zweli Dlamini assured the public that any concerns about the horses’ well-being are taken seriously.

He stated that the EMPD equestrian unit monitors the horses daily to ensure they receive the necessary care and nutrition.

Current Measures For EMPD Horses

Dlamini highlighted that the city has allocated funds for feeding the horses, although a hold-up in the procurement process has impacted the timely delivery of resources.

The current focus is on concluding a tender process to secure a reliable animal feed supplier. In the interim, a mini-tender has been issued to appoint a temporary supplier to bridge any immediate feed shortages.
