A resurfaced clip of former Ekurhuleni city manager Imogen Mashazi flaunting premium designer brands has triggered a wave of public anger, coinciding with her tense appearance at the Madlanga commission of inquiry.

Filmed in September at the exclusive Lux Afrique Jewellery, Watch and Home Exhibition (LAJWH Expo) in Lagos, the viral video shows Mashazi casually listing each luxury item she wore on the day.

“I’ll start with my earrings. My earrings, bracelet and necklace are from Bvlgari, same set and then the watch is Audemars Piguet 2025. Dress is Dolce & Gabbana, my handbag is a Kelly range, and my shoes are obviously Hermes,” she said.

Her look included a Bvlgari Serpenti Seduttori bracelet valued at around R672,700, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak priced at roughly R1.27 million, and Hermès Oran sandals costing about R14,336.

Commission Conduct Puts Imogen Mashazi Under the Microscope

Mashazi’s behaviour during her Monday appearance at the Madlanga commission fuelled the growing spotlight. Viewers watched her apply lipstick, pull faces, scroll through her phone, laugh, and challenge officials as testimony continued.

In her evidence, she accused suspended EMPD chief Isaac Mapiyeye of sexually harassing female subordinates and raping some of them. She further claimed she had been pushed into early retirement by Mayor Dr Nkosindiphile Xhakaza.

But as proceedings unfolded, attention shifted sharply to her lavish lifestyle after the glamour-filled clip resurfaced online, sparking fierce public debate.

Inside Imogen Mashazi’s High-End Fashion and Bag Collection

Speaking at the LAJWH Expo, Mashazi explained her long-standing love of fashion.

“I grew up in a very sophisticated family. My father used to like fashion — and my mom. They used to buy us expensive clothes, good leather shoes and motivated us to go to school so that we were able to afford life when we grew up,” she said.

She also shared details of her multimillion-rand Hermès handbag collection:

“Hermes. All my bags. This is a Birkin. I have almost all the colours of the exotic leather. Now I’m doing exotic collection. The only handbag that I use is a Hermes. The rest of the brands I’ve given to my daughter.”

Exotic Hermès Birkin bags range from about R680,000 to more than R7.6 million, depending on size, materials and rarity.

In 2021, Mashazi earned a basic salary of R3,185,300, bringing her total annual package to R4,137,936, including pension, medical aid, allowances and bonuses.

Despite the backlash, Mashazi maintains that her fashion preferences do not reflect who she is.

“I’m a very introverted person, but I like people. I’ve always liked meeting new people, you know, making new friends all over the world, because I like travelling. So people sometimes feel that this one is like a high-profile person, while I’m not. They don’t understand that I love people.”
