Eight Dead In Mpumalanga Tavern Shooting Tragedy

A deadly shooting in the early hours of Saturday has left eight people dead and three others recovering in hospital, sparking a massive police manhunt.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, confirmed the fatalities, stating that six victims died at the scene while two succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Among the victims, one was found lifeless inside a bullet-riddled VW Polo. Another Polo at the scene also bore evidence of gunfire.

“A dedicated team of experts has been established to investigate the shooting,” Mdhluli said. He added that no arrests have been made, but efforts to track down the armed gang responsible are ongoing.

Authorities have urged the public to assist with information, encouraging anyone with leads to call the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or report via the MYSAPSAPP. “All information will be treated confidentially, and callers may remain anonymous,” Mdhluli assured.

Outrage and Condolences

The tragedy has drawn condemnation from Mpumalanga’s Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison. MEC Jackie Macie described the incident as deeply disturbing and called for swift action.

“We appeal to the community to allow the police space and time to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. Liquor traders must also prioritise the safety of patrons,” Macie emphasised.

The MEC extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The Pienaar shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents in Mpumalanga, raising concerns over public safety. The use of multiple firearms and targeted vehicles has prompted police to consider gang-related motives.
